Looking Back, Looking Forward

By Jamie Bush

In my junior year at Boston College, I signed a contract that took me into a world I was completely unprepared for, except that I liked people. Over the next 49 years, my career as an insurance broker blessed me beyond anything I’d imagined.

From my first clients, Stretch and Mary Barbara Walsh in South Boston, to Tom White, founder and CEO of J.F White Contracting (then the largest construction company in New England), the people I’ve served have taught me life lessons that have grown me in many ways, for which I will always be grateful.

Those I have partnered with in their various fields of specialization have represented the best of the best. From estate planning attorneys like David York in Salt Lake City to Family Governance experts like Tom Rogerson, to many in my own areas of specialization, like Michael Weiner in special needs planning, these partners have enabled me to serve our clients and their families in creative and important ways with tools, resources, and strategies that have added security and abundance to their lives.

Perhaps most important are the enduring relationships within our own team, like Cait Coombs, who have delivered on the promises I’ve extended on a day-to-day basis, while enduring my many flaws and occasional missteps.

Over the last decade, Bush & Company has evolved from an insurance-oriented practice to a niche, independent planning firm offering a holistic “purpose-driven” approach to planning, investments, and insurance. Our relationships with partners in related fields and our partnership with Valmark Financial Group allow us to serve clients at almost any level of wealth and/or complexity.

Meanwhile, management of the firm has transferred to my partner, Drake Richey, who is largely responsible for the growth we’ve experienced and the scope of our offerings. This was the intent when he joined us in 2015, and it’s comforting to know that our clients who know Drake now have the same confidence in him that I have had since the beginning.

Over the last few months, my role has been evolving from serving existing clients and developing new relationships to a consultative arrangement with clients who need help thinking about what they should be thinking about as they approach their next phase of life post career and/or business succession. It’s an exciting time for a firm like ours, which is somewhat countercultural in that we are constantly seeking ways to serve our clients and enhance their experience.

I’m looking forward to spending more time with my wife Sue, our children, and our seven grandchildren, while being more reflective on the changing world around us and how I could play a more active role in our city.

All the best to you and your family,

Jamie
